Positive Step On Microchipping
Farmers have welcomed news that Cabinet is to consider exempting farm dogs from microchipping rules, said Charlie
Pedersen, President of Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Inc).
His comments follow confirmation by the Minister of Agriculture Jim Anderton that Cabinet would “have another look” at
the chipping policy.
Mr Anderton told National Radio that he has a report from the Department of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture
and Forestry and after discussion with other ministers is suggesting changes to the policy.
“Although the Minister has clearly stated that he can’t give any guarantees, it is encouraging to hear him say there is
a case for exempting farm dogs,” said Mr Pedersen.
The only Australian state to move towards compulsory microchipping has been New South Wales, which has exempted farm
dogs.
“Farmers will be pleased the Minister has acknowledged the sense in farmer’s argument.
“A simple cost benefit analysis shows the cost of microchipping farm dogs far outweighs the benefit. There is nothing to
be gained from microchipping farm dogs,” said Mr Pedersen.
Compulsory microchipping of dogs is due to come into force on July 1.
“We can only hope Cabinet takes on board Mr Anderton’s case and allows an exemption for our hard working, well behaved
farm dogs,” concluded Mr Pedersen.
