28 February 2006
Building Consent Trends Steady
Trend figures show a continued high level for non-residential building consent values and slowing growth for residential
building consent values, Statistics New Zealand said today.
The value of consents issued for non-residential buildings in January 2006 is down $5 million (2.0 percent) from January
2005. The largest contributor to the January 2006 value was education buildings at $52 million.
For residential buildings, the value of consents issued in January 2006 is down $36 million (6.7 percent) from January
2005.
Consents were issued for 1,900 dwelling units in January 2006, just two more than were authorised in January last year.
There were 328 apartment units authorised in January 2006, compared with 615 in December and 166 in November. The trend
for the number of new dwelling authorisations is relatively stable, following a decline from the high level of 2003 to
2004.
