Building Consent Values Rise in 2005
For the 2005 calendar year, the value of consents for all buildings rose $242 million (2.3 percent) from the 2004
calendar year, Statistics New Zealand said today. Consents for residential buildings fell $161 million, while consents
for non-residential buildings rose $402 million.
Trend values continue to rise for residential and non-residential building consents. For residential buildings, the
trend value has risen for the latest six months. For non-residential buildings, the trend value has been at a high level
for the last two to three years. The value of consents issued for residential buildings in December 2005 rose $16
million (2.9 percent) compared with December 2004.
For non-residential buildings, the value of consents issued in December 2005 rose $35 million (10 percent) compared
with December 2004. The largest contributor in December 2005 was hospitals and nursing homes, with a value of $113
million.
Consents for 2,491 new dwelling units were issued in December 2005, a rise of 3.1 percent compared with December 2004.
Dwelling numbers during 2005 were generally lower than in 2004, but December 2005 figures were augmented by a reasonably
high number of apartments. There were 603 apartment units authorised in December 2005, compared with 166 units in
November and 168 units in October.
