Brumby’s on the rise with 30th anniversary
Leading Australian and New Zealand bakery franchise Brumby’s is celebrating its 30th birthday in a year which saw it open its 21st New Zealand store and its shares reach a record price more than double what they listed for less than two years ago.
The bakery chain began three decades ago as a single shop in Victoria, Australia, named the ‘Old Style Bread Centre’.
Michael Sherlock, managing director of Brumby’s, said like many successful businesses Brumby’s had a modest beginning with its first store in the Melbourne suburb of Ashburton in 1975.
“During the ‘80s, we wanted to show our truly Australian identity so the Brumby’s brand was born. By the early ‘90s, Brumby’s had become a true franchise success story,’’ said Mr Sherlock.
“And now with more than 300 stores across Australia and New Zealand, we have still maintained our outstanding reputation for the quality of our preservative-free bread and more than 150 products.”
Mr Sherlock said Bumby’s had witnessed a remarkable growth period in its 30th year.
“We opened our 300th franchise, including our 21st store in New Zealand, as well as launching the first of our new concept stores Brumby’s Go! which have been a remarkable success,’’ Mr Sherlock said.
“At the same time we are continuing to investigate opportunities to expand in Asia and the Pacific.
“And after listing on the Bendigo Stock Exchange (BSX) in December 2003 at $0.55, Brumby’s share price recently reached $1.35.”
