CHH workers hold second day-of-action
Angry Carter Holt Harvey workers are gathering outside the Carter Holt Harvey head office in Manukau as a second national day of industrial action gets under way.
Hundreds of workers at CHH sites across the country are holding strikes and pickets in protest over the company’s across-the-board refusal to pay workers a five per cent increase.
The action involves members of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, the National Distribution Union and the Amalgamated Workers’ Union, and follows similar action on August 19.
EPMU national secretary Andrew Little said that the company should not under estimate the depth of feeling among its workers over the issue.
“New Zealanders are getting pay increases of at least five per cent this year, and yet here we have one of our largest employers categorically refusing to pay the going rate,” he said.
NDU wood sector secretary Jim Jones said that the Five Per Cent-Plus campaign would intensify if necessary.
“But we hope the company will start listening to its workforce and that won’t be necessary,” he said.
Today’s action includes:
Pickets: outside the CHH head office, Great South Rd, Manukau, Auckland, from 7am to noon, as well as in Whangarei, Tokoroa and Christchurch. bianchi 0274 585600
Strikes and stop-work meetings:
CHH Paperbag, Auckland. CHH Timber, Nelson Carters Truss Plant, Christchurch. Carters Truss Plant, Auckland. CHH Timber Roundwood, Tokoroa. CHH Wood Products, Whangarei.
