Former Kiwi publisher targets NZ magazine market
AUCKLAND, 22 July 2005 - Australian magazine publishing heavyweight, FPC Magazines, has extended their circulation across the Tasman with the launch of a New Zealand edition of Super Food Ideas under the guidance of former New Zealand Publisher of the Year award winner, Michael McHugh.
McHugh, better known in New Zealand for winning Publisher of the Year in 1999, now heads up Australia’s third largest magazine publishing company and is enthusiastic about the opportunities that exist in the competitive New Zealand market.
“New Zealand is a very strong, emerging market for us. New Zealanders are very big consumers of magazines. They are decisive consumers - they know what they like and what they don’t like,” he said.
McHugh said Super Food Ideas is Australia’s number one selling food magazine, a success they hope to repeat in New Zealand.
He said the decision to launch a New Zealand edition was due partly to the large number of requests for the magazine to be sold in New Zealand from Kiwis who bought Super Food Ideas while visiting Australia.
“We were receiving a lot of feedback from New Zealand readers even though the magazine wasn’t sold in New Zealand. We knew Kiwis were asking their friends living in Australia to send them copies, so we undertook some market research and found there was a gap in the market,” he said.
Super Food Ideas Editor, Mallory Hughes, believes the magazine will cater to those New Zealanders who want a food magazine that is full of quick, simple family meal solutions.
“Super Food Ideas is not a coffee table magazine – it is a magazine that will live in the kitchen and be used again and again. Each edition contains more than 80 easy to follow recipes using reasonably priced ingredients that are readily available in supermarkets,” she said.
The August issue of Super Food Ideas will be on sale in supermarkets and bookstores from Monday 25 July with a cover price of $4.95.
