NZ design guide a world leader
Building design documentation guidelines developed by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) as part of the industry’s
response to the weather tight homes crisis have been acclaimed as a world leader.
Mr John Pfahlert, Chairman of the CIC, said today the guidelines were intended to provide a common language for
designers, builders and their clients to proceed on a project with absolute trust in the agreed process.
“We were pleased to hear recently from a representative of FIDIC – the International Federation of Consulting Engineers
-- that the guidelines are being talked about globally as an important tool and a world’s first of their type. FIDIC
represents 23 member countries and about one third of worldwide engineering professionals.
“Our hope is that the guidelines will help establish best practice documentation that will have a lasting impact in
setting common ground for all sectors in the construction process. Good design, best practice procurement, use of key
performance indicators and careful definition of specifications are all vital elements of a successful project that will
achieve a quality end result at best value for money spent. They are all covered in the guidelines.
“Selection of a project team that follows these guidelines should give additional confidence to those wishing to have
new homes built for them or embarking on major construction projects.”
Mr Pfahlert said the guidelines had already been made freely available to architects and engineers practicing in NZ and
would continue to be made available free of charge through arrangements the CIC is now negotiating with Construction
Information Ltd, and through its website. CIL provides the Masterspec range of services to construction companies in New
Zealand.
