Sir George Seymour 'Step Up' Course Means Everybody WINZ
A new training programme to get more graduates and migrants in employment has been given the green light by Work and
Income Wellington region, with the first intake of students to commence next month.
The four-week programme, 'Step up to Employment', will be run by the Wellington campus of New Zealand's largest private
training establishment, Sir George Seymour National College of Tourism and Travel.
Recognising a need to equip graduates and qualified migrants with employment-related skills, course co-ordinator Sue
Scott said a request from Work and Income Wellington to submit a CV-writing course resulted in a much more comprehensive
programme.
"The aim of the course is to help participants gain sustainable employment by arming them with some of the key
employment-gaining strategies their previous study didn't cover," she said.
"This includes everything from customer service and communication skills to going through the interview and job
application process."
The first intake for the programme, which is the first of its kind in Wellington specifically aimed at graduates and
qualified migrants, is due to start on 4 October this year.
Work and Income Wellington region spokesperson Mel Harrington said Sir George Seymour has proven track record in gaining
employment for their graduates, so they felt confident they'd achieve the objective of giving students the necessary
skills to gain employment.
"There is definitely a need in this area to assist people who are qualified in some area but lack employment-finding
skills," she said.
"We are very hopeful it will be success and based on the outcome, we could look at future programmes with the school."
