Joint Winners of 2003 Myers Media Scholarship Announced
The second NZBR Douglas Myers Media Scholarship has been jointly awarded to National Radio transport reporter, Jane O'Loughlin, and political editor for the Christchurch Press, Colin Espiner.
The two $15,000 scholarships will enable Ms O'Loughlin and Mr Espiner to travel abroad to research and prepare material on specific public policy issues.
Business Roundtable executive director Roger Kerr said he had been impressed by the calibre of entries.
"The judges selected Jane O'Loughlin and Colin Espiner because of the importance of the work they wish to complete, and because each presented well-considered and thoughtful scholarship proposals," Mr Kerr said.
Ms O'Loughlin will use her scholarship to learn more about congestion charges in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, while Mr Espiner will study immigration issues in the United Kingdom and western Europe. They will take up their scholarships during 2004.
The judging panel was convened by Warwick Roger, editor-at-large, North and South magazine; and included Suzanne Carty, former editor, The Evening Post; Barry Soper, political editor, Independent Radio News; George Andrews, independent television producer; and Mr Kerr.
The annual scholarship is open to print, radio and television journalists, researchers and producers in the early stages of their careers.
Last year's winners were Kevin Taylor, New Zealand Herald , and Christine Nikiel, National Business Review.
