DHL First Into Iraq As Sanctions Lifted
The leading provider of export freight services and solutions, DHL, has become the first express and logistics company
to commence operations within Iraq, following the lifting of economic sanctions by the UN Security Council.
DHL will offer both air express services through DHL Express, and heavy freight and logistics through its DHL Danzas Air & Ocean division.
According to DHL New Zealand’s General Manager, Mr Phil Rountree, by commencing operations following the lifting of
sanctions, DHL will be able to help the Iraqi people rebuild the country’s infrastructure and economy, as well as
significantly improve the transportation of humanitarian aid.
“DHL is delighted to be able to utilise its express and air and ocean services to assist the local and international
communities in their efforts to rebuild Iraq,” said Mr Rountree. “The fact we are able to establish services almost the
minute sanctions are lifted is testament to the resourcefulness of our people.”
An initial DHL staff of seven, including four Iraqi people will be based within the country. DHL will be offering a
service of three flights weekly, flying from Bahrain to Baghdad. An AN-12 airplane offering a capacity of 20 tonnes will
operate on the air express route. Trucking services will also be offered on two routes from Kuwait City to Basra and
Jordan to the Northern zone of Iraq.
