Number of New Dwellings Continues to Increase
The trend in the number of new dwelling units has been increasing since November 2000 at an average rate of 1.8 percent
per month, according to Statistics New Zealand. For June 2002, building consents were issued for 1,864 new dwelling
units, worth $316 million.
The Auckland region has continued to be the main contributor to recent increases in the number of new dwelling units.
For the quarter ended June 2002, the number of new dwelling units for the Auckland region was 786 higher than for the
quarter ended June 2001. When comparing the same quarters, other regions that have shown significant increases have been
Canterbury (up 150 units), Bay of Plenty (up 93 units), Waikato (up 79 units) and Otago (up 67 units). In contrast, the
number of new dwelling units in the Wellington region was down by 53 units.
The total value of non-residential building consents issued in June 2002 was $210 million. Consents issued for education
buildings were worth $37 million, 18 percent of the non-residential buildings total. Consents for factories and
industrial buildings contributed $33 million or 16 percent.
The total value of consents issued for all buildings in June 2002 was $591 million. Recently, residential buildings have
contributed an increasing share to this total. Residential buildings have contributed 66 percent of the total for all
buildings for the quarter ended June 2002, compared with 58 percent for the quarter ended June 2001.
