Information Technology Sales Growth Continues Sales of information technology (IT) goods and services (excluding
communication services) were $6.8 billion for the 2001 financial year, according to Statistics New Zealand's Information
Technology Survey. This is an increase of 3.3 percent from the 2000 financial year. Sales of IT goods and services have
grown every year, since the Information Technology Survey began in the 1994 financial year, at a mean growth rate of
11.6 percent per year.
The survey mainly covers businesses that are engaged in the computer wholesaling, telecommunications and computer
services industries. Businesses that manufacture IT goods may not be included in this survey.
In the 2001 financial year, total sales of IT goods and services (excluding communication services) to New Zealand
end-users increased 4.0 percent to $4.1 billion. This increase is mainly the result of a 25.9 percent increase in sales
to New Zealand end-users of communication hardware and cables. Sales to New Zealand end-users of computer services
decreased by 1.3 percent to $1.8 billion.
Exports of IT goods and services (excluding communication services) have increased 11.7 percent to $770.2 million
between the 2000 and 2001 financial years. The main increases were an 18.6 percent increase in the exports of
communication hardware and cables and a 12.9 percent increase in exports of computer services.
