A tasty Sunday is forecast
Forecast westerly winds of 15 knots and slight seas in Foveaux Strait bode well for the opening of the Bluff oyster season tomorrow (Sunday, March 5).
Hardy Bluff fishermen head out on tonight and begin fishing on the stroke of midnight. Forecast light rain and poor visibility won’t dampen their efforts.
Again national supermarket chain Big Fresh plans to fly the first of the season’s bounty to its outlets nation-wide.
It is the fifth year in a row the company has carried out its First of the Season Bluff oyster run, flying oysters to 14 Big Fresh outlets nation-wide.
Big Fresh has organised a fast boat to pick up the early catch in Foveaux Strait offshore from Bluff at about 2am for delivery to Barnes Oysters in Invercargill.
And this year the first shipment has a VIP escort. Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt is personally delivering 240 dozen oysters to Big Fresh markets in Auckland.
Mayor Shabolt takes off on the first Air New Zealand flight out of Invercargill at 7.05 am with the oysters firmly belted in on a seat beside him.
This year Bluff Oyster quotas have been issued for the collection of nearly 15 million Bluff oysters. The season lasts until 31 August.
