Changing back the system of election from MMP to first-past-the-post would do nothing to improve politicians’ behaviour,
which was just as bad under the previous regime as it has been under MMP, says the leader of the Natural Law Party,
Bryan Lee.
“A return to first-past-the-post would only entrench National and Labour as the principal contenders for power and would
reduce the possibility of reform from any other quarter,” Mr Lee said.
“We would move electorally from one to the other as we did in the past, with outcomes that would be depressingly
familiar. Neither party has brought lasting satisfaction to New Zealanders and there is nothing to suggest that this
pattern would change.
“The Natural Law Party,” Mr Lee said, “is the only party capable of addressing the two chronic underlying problems that
bedevil New Zealand politics. These are the adversarial approach, with its overweening emphasis on negativity, and an
approach to problem solving that operates on the surface level of the problem rather than on its underlying cause.
“Our proven policies, validated by an extensive body of scientific research, offer the electorate the only possibility
of delivering answers to our core problems in all policy areas.”
