Auckland City Council - City Scene

It is now twelve months since the last local body elections. I want to take this opportunity to say how pleased I am at
the results achieved for the Hauraki Gulf during this first year of the new council.
The 1999/2000 Annual Plan produced some exciting results for both Waiheke and Great Barrier, with long outstanding
projects finally receiving adequate funding.
Waiheke projects that are now being implemented include the upgrading and sealing of Tahi Road, the island's industrial
centre; a footpath/boardwalk down Palm Road to popular Palm Beach; the upgrading of beach facilities at Little Oneroa
Beach, a favourite picnic spot; the final design and negotiations for the northern service lane at Oneroa; increased
funding for the Oneroa Sewage project; and new tennis courts and a skateboard park.
On Great Barrier, most of the funding in the annual plan will go towards road sealing, which received an extra $200,000,
and the upgrading of Claris airfield.
Work will also begin on a new pavilion at Waiheke's Onetangi Sports Park. This development is the most significant
project to happen in the gulf for many years. So far, $3.5 million has been spent on land purchase and sportsfield
development. The sports park is located in a picturesque setting below Rangihoua hill, a historic site of great
importance to Maori.
When it opens about the middle of next year the park will include 3 playing fields, a sports pavilion, extensive
walkways and bridle paths, and a picnic and playground area with barbecues. The park surrounds include the Waiheke golf
course and the historical village. When it is finished, it will be a magnificent facility that everyone can be proud of
and enjoy.
This summer promises to be an exciting time in the gulf. Visitors should remember that the gulf islands are different
from the city. You can't have 20 minute showers, or leave the tap running, without the risk of running out of water.
There may be delays in tanker delivery at this peak time of the year. Drivers, many roads are narrow, winding
(especially on Great Barrier) and unsealed... SLOW DOWN!! Watch out for pedestrians on roadsides. Expect some delays at
wharves and queues in shops.
Slow down, relax; display patience and good humour. Leave the pressure of work, town, and commuting behind. Enjoy a
fantastic time in the beautiful Hauraki Gulf.
