Areas of Auckland where growth will be encouraged under the Liveable Communities 2050 proposal will be assured of
adequate infrastructure to meet residents' needs before development takes place.
"Upgrading of drainage systems and long-term solutions to sewerage separation in older parts of the city will be
critical in implementing the policy" says Councillor Doug Astley, chairman of the City Works Committee.
Integrated development is one of the key principles under the Liveable Communities proposal. For example, proposed
public transport corridors connecting the developing areas will need major investment in stormwater and wastewater
capacity.
"Without these designated areas we could not support the level of growth envisaged, or growth would occur in the all too
familiar haphazard manner." says Councillor Astley.
"Additional infrastructure capacity must be provided for the needs of the increased population. These factors need to be
reflected in the city's strategic plan.
"Council will have to prioritise its long-term investment in these areas to ensure the additional infrastructure
required can be provided. We also need a commitment for the maintenance of existing systems."
