Towards A Walkable Auckland

A project to make Auckland a more "walkable" city has been initiated by the Council’s Transport and Roading Committee.
The aim is to make it easier to get around on foot, whether for recreation or for commuting.
Committee chairwoman Cr Catherine Harland a Walkable Communities Group will be established to "build bridges" between
the city’s recreational and transport planning activities.
"It will be looking at establishing a network of walkways, not just through parks but also to make it easier for
children to walk to school, residents to walk to their local shops and commuters to walk to work or to use passenger
transport.
"It is well known that the easier it is for people to get around on foot, the more likely they are to leave their cars
at home, even for longer trips.
"Walking is another alternative to single-occupant car use that warrants our attention, along with cycling and public
transport."
Chairperson of the Walkable Communities Advisory Group, Cr Maire Leadbeater, says the workshop to establish the group
was exciting and people were spilling over with enthusiasm and ideas.
