Research on the impacts of the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake will be discussed in a public event held in the town on Wednesday 10 April.
The 7.8 magnitude quake damaged land, property and infrastructure across the top of the South and lower North Island.
Innovation and resilience have been essential for the rebuilding and recovery of communities.
At this event, researchers who have been working with the Kaikōura community, council and local businesses will discuss
the recovery of the coastal environment, tourism and the marine economy, as well as the strengthening of community
resilience and response. They will share lessons they have learned and how these can support a stronger future for the
region.
The seven speakers are from two government-funded National Science Challenges - Sustainable Seas and Resilience to
Nature’s Challenges:

• Dr Joanna Fountain, Lincoln University – Post-disaster tourism
• Assoc Prof Nick Lewis, University of Auckland – Blue economy
• Dr Dan Hikuroa, University of Auckland – Māori marine economy
• Ashley Rudkevitch, Lincoln University – Social recovery and community initiatives
• Prof David Simmons, Lincoln University – Preparedness for future events among visitors
• Laura Tilley, University of Canterbury – Tsunami evacuation planning.
