Horowhenua District Council is offering to fix leaky taps and toilet cisterns for free – but only for the first 25
reported between Friday 18 January and Friday 8 February.*
Water Services Engineer Albert Hoffmann said these common household leaks can waste a surprising amount of water.
“A typical dripping tap would fill a bathtub with water in a month,” he said. “Getting leaky taps and toilets fixed is
an easy way people can help to save water.”
He said leaky toilet cisterns can often be identified by the sound of hissing, trickling or running water coming from
the cistern.
The offer is open to residents connected to Council water supplies whose leak can be fixed with a new tap washer or
cistern gasket, and covers half an hour of labour by a Council-nominated plumber.
Mr Hoffmann said Council encourages residents to keep an eye out for suspected water leaks wherever they occur.
“The warm dry weather of summer makes leaks easier to spot. If you notice suspicious wet areas or unexplained patches of
green grass in otherwise dry ground, report it to Council or call your plumber if it is on your property so the leak can
be fixed before it becomes serious and costly.”
