Spotlight on Local Climate Action (and Trees!) 7 & 8 September
On Friday 7 September and Saturday 8 September Christchurch joins thousands of towns and cities around the world to
“Rise for Climate”. This mass event has been sparked off by the Global Climate Action Summit [ https://globalclimateactionsummit.org ] being held in San Francisco. Governor Jerry Brown put out a call worldwide for mayors and local leaders of civil
society to come together to make a commitment to climate leadership in their communities as national leaders are
dragging their feet..
In Christchurch on Friday 7 September at 7pm at the Transitional Cathedral, 350 Christchurch and Christchurch City
Council are hosting Spotlighting Local Climate Leadership, a lively smorgasbord of stories from Cantabrians who are
showing leadership on the climate challenge in their schools, businesses, churches, unions and workplaces.
“Come and learn what they are doing and be inspired for your own groups” said 350 Christchurch spokesperson, Torfrida
Wainwright.
“Then on Saturday 8 September come to Victoria Square 1pm-3pm. We’ll have native seedlings for a gold coin koha to take
home and plant, or choose seedlings to plant with the City Council in Grampian Reserve and playground on Saturday 15
Sept. There’ll be music, speakers, info stalls, face-painting and fun activities for the kids as well as a tour of
Otakaro Community orchard.”

In 2017 the world lost 29.4 million hectares of trees through deforestation and wildfires. That's a bigger area than all
New Zealand. If the world can plant enough trees to replace this loss every year 1/3rd of the world's climate goals

Both events are organised in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council and supported by the Council's Innovation
