Continuing efforts to extinguish fire in Timaru's harbour
Fire and Emergency are still continuing efforts to extinguish a fire in Timaru’s harbour with a team of 18 Firefighters currently on site.
"The ship was closed up over the weekend and today’s focus is to make entry onto the front part of the ship with a hose line to identify areas of existing hot spots," says Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s area commander Steven Greenyer.
"The fire is still very much contained and getting into the ship will allow us to deal with the areas that need attention and to start pumping some water off the ship. This will help us to keep it afloat and allow us to use more firefighting water on board the ship if needed."
Once the crews are on board they will reassess the situation and look at getting further down into the lower decks.
"As always, public safety is our priority and we’re doing everything we can to extinguish the fire."
