MacKenzie Country Trust Welcomes Report
Chair of the Mackenzie Country Trust, Julia Mackenzie, has welcomed the report Mackenzie Basin – Opportunities for Agency Alignment completed by Dr Hugh Logan and John Hutchings launched today in Tekapo. The report contains several recommendations,
including how the Mackenzie Country Trust could improve its effectiveness.
“We are pleased that the report recognises that the vision of the Mackenzie Country Trust is strongly supported”, says
Mrs Mackenzie.
“The Trust is keen to work with the Mackenzie community, government agencies and the signatories of the Mackenzie
Agreement to see a balanced land use pattern across the Mackenzie Basin, and implement some of the potential solutions
identified in the report.
“The membership and the Chairperson of the Trust have been refreshed and we recently engaged a General Manager. We are
confident that the Trust will make considerable progress over the next year to implement the Mackenzie Agreement,
including signing our first Joint Management Agreement to protect high value ecological areas.
“The Trust is requesting to meet with the relevant Ministers to brief them on the Mackenzie Country Trust and request
Government support, including funding, for the Trust’s activities. We hope Ministers will be able to meet with us as
soon as possible” says Mrs Mackenzie.
The Mackenzie Country Trust is a charitable trust established in 2016 to implement the Mackenzie Agreement signed in
2013 through a collaborative approach that balances agricultural land use with conservation, environmental protection,
public use, outdoor recreation and landscape protection.
