Tourism backs Water Conservation Order for Hawke’s Bay rivers
Granting a Water Conservation Order for the Ngaruroro and Clive Rivers would benefit the tourism industry as well as
protect the rivers, Tourism Industry Aotearoa says.
In its submission to the Environmental Protection Authority, TIA says the proposed Water Conservation Order would
improve the management of the rivers.
The Ngaruroro and Clive Rivers hold values that are of significant importance to the tourism industry, including wild,
scenic and natural landscapes; excellent water quality; the opportunity for multi-day trips; outstanding angling and jet
boating opportunities; and habitat for native birds and fish.
A Water Conservation Order would give assurance to the tourism industry that all essential New Zealand values and needs
will be met for these two rivers, TIA Chief Executive Chris Roberts says.
“Fresh water is a pivotal resource for the tourism industry and, unlike some other sectors, we do not need to extract
it. Tourism values are consistent with the aim of having fresh water that sustains fishing, swimming and mahinga
kai/food gathering,” Mr Roberts says.
Tourism New Zealand data shows that in 2016, 28% of our international visitors took part in raft, kayak, canoe, jet boat
or fresh water fishing activities. These visitors are high value – they stayed an average length of 31 days and spent an
average of $4800, well above the norm.
TIA’s Tourism Election Manifesto, Tourism for Tomorrow, calls on the incoming Government to demonstrate a serious commitment to protecting the environment, recognising its
importance to tourism. This includes a commitment to enhancing New Zealand’s fresh water resources.
“Our country needs a clear vision and a long-term strategy for management of fresh water that reflects the values we
hold as New Zealanders. We all have an active role to play in ensuring we leave the environment in a better state for
future generations of Kiwis and our visitors.”
