Possible marine oil spill - Media advisory #1
Otago Regional Council staff trained in oil spill response are at Oamaru Harbour following an incident overnight where a fishing vessel ran aground near the harbour entrance.
There has been large surf rolling in and strong winds with an incoming tide which could result in the vessel breaking up.
Response equipment has been deployed with the aim to minimise the impact of any spilt fuel on what is a particularly sensitive environment.
We are liaising with the Department of Conservation and have informed Maritime New Zealand.
