Council funding allocations focus on resilience in the city
Wellington City Council’s Grants Subcommittee has approved over $300,000 in funding to 61 recipients from a range of
applications across heritage, the arts and culture, and community groups – with a strong focus on further developing
resilience in the capital.
The subcommittee’s Chair, Councillor Sarah Free, says the recent earthquake has highlighted the need to do more to
support resilience in the city, and an adjustment to criteria in the Built Heritage Incentive Fund demonstrates that.
“We have proactively responded to the 14 November earthquake by enabling owners of heritage-listed buildings to apply
for our March round of funding for works required to stabilise, repair or obtain engineering assessments since the quake
and on-going after-shocks.
“Another key area has been concentrating on building relationships across communities, and funding for Neighbours Day
Aotearoa (NDA) 2017 is a key component of that. The current theme is Zero Tolerance to Loneliness, which is aiming to
encourage inclusion and interaction between youth and seniors.
“Similarly, the Strathmore Park Community Centre has received contract funding to support it while it transitions from
being Council-run to community-managed, and it needs funding to achieve this and maintain resources,” adds Councillor
Free.
The arts sector also benefited from this funding round announcement, which aligns with the Long Term Plan, according to
Mayor and Arts and Culture Portfolio Leader Justin Lester.
“This allocation of funds recognises the importance of the arts sector to Wellington’s economy, culture and identity –
and will further cement the city’s place as the creative capital of New Zealand,” says Mayor Lester.
Meanwhile, the Waste Minimisation Seed Fund will contribute to innovative and creative ways to reducing waste, and
influencing community action and behaviour change.
Funding goes towards initiatives and organisations that meet the criteria for each grant round.
