Whanganui podcast delves into city’s unique past
Revisited is a six-episode podcast series created by journalist Zaryd Wilson and writer Cass Alexander.
The Whanganui pair have spent the past six months, researching, interviewing, writing and recording the first season of the series, which was launched on October 6.
Zaryd and Cass look into the story of the 1915 riot in Victoria Avenue, the Aramoho Zoo which ran in the early 1900s, the hoax bomb threat at Star FM in 1996, former mayor Charles Mackay’s shooting of Darcy Creswell, the murder of Chinese market gardener Chow Yat and the bombing of the Wanganui Computer.
The podcast retells the stories and features interviews with people connected in some way.
“We were both listening to a lot of podcasts and were talking about the historical Whanganui stories we’d heard about that would suit the format,” Zaryd said.
“It was never about reinvestigating them or even coming to a conclusion. It more an opportunity to re-tell them and hear from people with a close connection to the stories. Many of our contributors had never been on record before.”
Cass says some of the stories featured in the episodes seem stranger than fiction.
“For a relatively small city, we have such an interesting history. The criteria for the stories is that they had to be larger than life, or have a twist. Whanganui has always been a diverse and unique place so we wanted to capture that and a podcast lets us share our history with the whole world.”
Revisited is fortunate to have the use of Whanganui’s Castlecliff Lights as theme music.
The pair also used local businesses in the creation of the podcast. The narration was recorded at Chronicle Records and the website was designed by Two Monkeys. Joseph Salmon and Design provided the visuals design for each episodes as well as the logo.
The podcast received funding Whanganui District Creative Communities Scheme.
