News Release - Low pressure brings wet and windy end to week

MetService News Release

Sunday 3 July 2016

“Clear skies and little wind contributed to the cold temperatures across the country this weekend. It was the coldest day of the year so far for many yesterday morning, with South Waiouru dropping to -8.8 degrees and Dunedin Airport to -7.4 degrees,” said MetService Meteorologist Ciaran Doolin.

“It’s going to be a mixed bag of weather this week, with a bit of wet around on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a mostly fine mid-week, and finally a low pressure system brings heavy rain and strong winds to round things off,” he explained.

A shallow low pressure system skirts across the northern North Island tomorrow, while a series of fronts bring periods of rain to the West Coast and far south. Elsewhere stays dry with areas of cloud. On Tuesday, the fronts move further north bringing a few showers to coastal areas of both islands. Into Wednesday, it should be a mostly sunny day apart from scattered rain in the far south which gradually clears.

A deep low pressure system from the Tasman Sea spreads rain, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, and strong or gale northeasterlies across the North Island on Thursday. On Friday, the low is forecast to track across the North Island to the southeast, easing the rain in the northern North Island, and spreading rain over northeastern South Island. Furthermore, gale or severe gale southeasterlies are likely to affect the central and southern North Island and northern South Island on Friday.

“There is some uncertainty at this stage about the precise track of the low, so people are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and any Severe Weather Warnings or Watches that may be issued for this event,” added Doolin.
