Upper Hutt City Council looking forward to a helping hand from the Mormons
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are inviting the public to join them at Harcourt Park, where fencing and paths will get a spruce-up on 27 February as part of the Mormon Helping Hands programme.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 18 FEB 2016—Upper Hutt’s Harcourt Park is to receive some help this year thanks to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Mormon Helping Hands programme this year will be focusing on some maintenance work at the park, guided by Council’s Parks and Reserves Team.
This includes painting the vehicle barrier along Harcourt Park frontage on Akatarawa Rd; adding gravel to the path below the Rhododendron gardens; widening and adding gravel to the Hutt River Trail; and reforming the stone edging to the Harcourt Park bush walks. The work will be carried out on 27 February.
The Mormon Helping Hands programme has been around for some time and, in 2015, contributed to Sacred Heart Cathedral in Wellington and Pomare School in Lower Hutt.
According to the Mormon news room website: The Mormon Helping Hands program brings together members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their neighbors to provide community service. These volunteers in their trademark yellow shirts help people whose lives have been affected by natural disasters and other emergencies. Mormon Helping Hands volunteers also partner with government and nonprofit organizations to support and improve the communities where they live.
The Helping Hands program reflects the desire of Mormons to follow the example of Jesus Christ by serving others. The effort receives resources from Church humanitarian services, and the projects are coordinated by local Church leaders.
This year, the Mormons are inviting the general public to join in on the project.
“This is a project for the community, and we welcome anyone and everyone to come along and participate with us as we do our part to enhance this public space,” says Mormon Helping Hands organiser, Tupu Williams.
“It’s fantastic that the Mormons are helping us out and investing in their community,” says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “There is never a shortage of help communities can use in the form of volunteer work, and Council is very happy to be on the receiving end of it.”
“Harcourt Park is one of our city’s key destinations and the help we get from the Mormons will maintain its character and beauty, as well as enhance this section of the Hutt River Trail.”
