Inter-Council Sports Tournament fast approaching
Twenty-nine teams from councils around the country will be attending the 18th annual Inter-Council Sports Tournament in
Thames on 12 March.
Although our Council didn't win the event last year, the Coromandel was the most popular choice to host the event this
year.
"The tournament has been running nationally for over 20 years and we have 29 teams from Councils around the country
coming to compete including Queenstown, Bay of Plenty, Whangarei, Far North, Wellington, Napier and Rotorua," says
Deputy Mayor Peter French.
Approximately 450 people will be making their way to Thames on the weekend of 12 March to participate in the tournament.
The town is already seeing benefits with many accommodation providers full for the weekend.
"Hosting the tournament is a really good opportunity to show off the Coromandel to other Councils and promote local
businesses," says Mr French. "Many of the players are staying around on theSunday to explore the district; those that
don't stay on will certainly get a taste and want to come back."
This is the second time our Council has hosted the event, the last being Whangamata in 2007. Apart from organising and
hosting the event, we will be putting in two teams made up of Council staff and their immediate families. The teams
compete in touch rugby and football (soccer) and a novelty event which remains secret until the day.
Competitors will register at the Brew on Friday night and will receive a registration pack of Coromandel-esque goodies
covered by their registration fee. The tournament will start 8am at Rhodes Park and will be followed with a prize-giving
dinner on the Saturday night.
