Sport Wellington Buggy Walk heads to Whitby
Hundreds of buggies are set to stroll through Whitby on Thursday 6th November for Sport Wellington’s monthly Buggy Walk.
Sport Wellington Buggy Walks are a free event occurring on the first Thursday of every month. The walks take place at a different location every month and aim to provide parents and caregivers with the opportunity to discover some of the many buggy friendly walking tracks throughout the Wellington region.
The November walk is set to take place at the Whitby Lower Lake Reserve. The walk will take participants around the lower lake, through bush tracks and pathways, before heading up towards the upper lake.
Event organiser James King says the Sport Wellington team aim to host walks in a variety of locations throughout the greater Wellington region so everyone gets a chance to explore walks in their area.
“Our last walk was at the Botanic Garden in Wellington and the walk before that was at Poets Park in Upper Hutt, so we are really looking forward to bringing the event to our Porirua based buggy walkers” says King. “There are some fantastic walks around the Whitby lakes so it’s a great opportunity for locals to get out and explore their area.”
October saw the largest of the monthly Buggy Walks with around 900 people turning up to take on the walking tracks at the Wellington Botanic Gardens. The event is featured as part of the Botanic Garden’s Spring Festival, a series of events that take advantage of the spring flowers in bloom at the gardens.
Held in conjunction with the Greater Wellington Regional Council and a number of partners and sponsors, Parents and Caregivers took advantage of a free BBQ and coffee, while their little ones were entertained by fairies, pirates, mascots, face painting and jazz band More Fun than the Library. Participants walked away with goodie bags and giveaways, while a lucky few took home some of the many prizes on offer.
“The October Buggy Walk was fantastic. The Sport Wellington team had a blast and we’ve received some great feedback from those who took part, walkers and sponsors alike. Big thanks must go to all those who contributed to make the day possible” says King.
Aside from the big annual October walk, monthly Buggy Walks usually attract around 100 – 300 participants. The walks vary in length and difficulty but will usually take 45 – 60 minutes to complete. With no registration necessary, everyone is encouraged just to show up and take part. Participants can also take advantage of free Caffe L’affare coffee and a BBQ, courtesy of Southern Cross Restaurant and Bar.
