ALIVE and kicking
Two new programmes are about to begin under Activation’s ALIVE programme, designed to increase participation in sport
and active recreation.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 09 OCT 2014—Activation’s ALIVE programme is ready to have two new programmes kick off in
mid-October. Following on from the ‘Have-A-Go’ programme held earlier in the year, these programmes are directed at
specific user groups, with focus groups advising preferred times, days and activities. The ALIVE programme objective is
to break down barriers for people who are rarely active, enabling them to participate in some form of ongoing active
recreation.
ALIVE Programme Coordinator, Angie Gooch says, “It’s been great getting into the community, networking with a variety of
user groups and finding out what their barriers, needs, and motivations are. Funding through Sport New Zealand has given
us the ability to creatively reduce barriers to participation and consequently encourage involvement in active
recreation.”
The Hutt Valley Teen Parent Programme has formed a focus group and designed their own programme including geocaching,
roller-skating, and ultimate frisbee. All of these activities are able to be continued after the programme has finished.
To have these young parents continuing in accessible active recreation is a major outcome for the ALIVE programme.
An over-50s focus group who have named themselves ‘Stepping Up’ has put together a seven-week programme, featuring walks
and dance. The first event for this is an hour-long easy walk starting at the Harriers clubrooms in Trentham Memorial
Park, at 10.00 am on Thursday 16 October. Angie Gooch (details below) is the contact for those who are 50+ and
interested in participating in this walk. Participants are encouraged to bring a buddy along as well.
The Activation team will organise, facilitate, and help staff the activities, and offer support to participants wherever
possible. This may include seminars on setting up and organising groups, fundraising, volunteering or whatever else the
groups require.
