At about 3.23pm today [28/8] police were advised of an incident at the Gladstone Pier in the port of Lyttelton where a large scissor lift has tipped over. The sole occupant on the lift has fallen to the ground.
As a result of this incident a 40 year old male has died at the scene.
Emergency services are currently at the scene together with Worksafe New Zealand Investigators. An investigation into the cause of this incident has been commenced.
Police are currently in the process of advising the family of the man, supported by victim support.
The matter has been referred to the coroner.
No further media comment will be made tonight.
