Fatal Helicopter Crash Near Wanaka
At about 12.20pm a helicopter operated by 'The Helicopter Line' carrying pilot, guide and 5 skiers crashed on Mount Alta in Mount Aspiring National Park, near Wanaka.
The helicopter was a Heli skiing trip out of Queenstown.
There were 7 males on board the helicopter. One person was confirmed deceased at the scene.
Police are currently in the process of contacting next of kin. Victim support is being coordinated through Police for all families and people involved.
All injured persons have been removed off the mountain. Two were treated at Wanaka Medical Centre for minor injuries. Four were transported to Dunedin Hospital in serious condition. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
All people on board were New Zealanders.
CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and TAIC (Transport Accident Investigation Commission) will be investigating the cause of the accident.
