Fatal crash at Eketahuna
A man aged in his mid-30s is dead after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a power pole at the corner of Herbert Street and Alfredton Road, Eketahuna, at approximately 10:30pm yesterday.
Members of the public witnessed the single vehicle crash and immediately called emergency services. Police, the Fire Service, and Ambulance attended the scene.
The man had been at a social gathering and was involved in an argument prior to the crash. He had left the gathering and driven approximately 600 metres down the road when the crash happened.
“Initial indications suggest that alcohol and speed are two factors that have caused this tragic and totally preventable crash. First aid was administered to the man who was the only occupant in the vehicle, however he was pronounced dead at the scene,” says Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery, Acting Central District Road Policing Manager.
The Serious Crash Unit has launched an investigation into the crash and have conducted a scene examination.
Police will not release any further details about the man until his next of kin has been informed and formal identification has been completed.
