Upper Hutt’s annual poetry competition underway
The 14th annual Upper Hutt Poetry Competition has begun—this year with two new categories specifically for children.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 30 MAY 2014—The Upper Hutt Poetry Competition is underway for the fourteenth consecutive
year. The introduction of two new categories, specifically for children, will ensure their eligibility to win prizes for
first time. The competition categories now include Children 6 – 12 years, Teenagers 13 – 18 years, and Adults over 19
years.
Entries must relate to the 2014 theme ‘Remembrance’, as this year marks the beginning of the 100 year commemorations of
World War I. However, the poetry can be about any type of remembrance - a pet, a particular celebration or a personal
reflection on a special time.
“Although the Library has hosted the Upper Hutt Poetry Competition in the past, this is the first time we will actually
be running it,” says Council’s Community Services Manager, Debbie Duncan. “We’d like to acknowledge and thank Tony Chad
for all his hard work in running the competition in previous years, and for inspiring the community to take part in this
event. We are also very excited about this year’s competition and our mandate to make it more widely incentivised by
presenting awards to multiple age groups.”
The Upper Hutt Poetry Competition is run in celebration of New Zealand Post’s National Poetry Day—Friday 22 August.
Winners will be announced at a prize-giving evening on this day.
Entry to the competition closes on Friday 8 August. Prizes to be presented on 22 August are listed below:
Adults (over 19 years) 1st $150 book voucher
2nd $100 book voucher
3rd $50 book voucher
Teenagers (13 – 18 years) 1st $50 book voucher + $100 book voucher for their school
2nd $30 book voucher + $50 book voucher for their school
Children (6 – 12 years) 1st $50 book voucher + $100 book voucher for their school
2nd $30 book voucher + $50 book voucher for their school
