World Environment Action Week
Raising awareness about local environmental issues could be a good move for Gisborne people next week.
World Environment Action Week starts on Sunday 1 June and Gisborne District Council will be running a series of facebook
challenges. There are prizes to be won every day.
The first challenge - Sunday’s Family Treasure Hunt - centres on Gisborne’s own second-hand Sunday. Anne Lister,
Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer, is asking as many people as possible to sort out stuff they no longer want.
“Things that you would normally send to the dump could be someone else’s treasure. Simply register your address with
Council and put your unwanted items by your letterbox for others to pick up.”
“I have wanted to get a photo of materials that are put out on Second-hand Sunday but as soon as the stuff hits the
pavement it is picked up by someone and away it goes to a new home. So the first challenge is to get photos of what
people picked up scored and what they use the items for.”
“Simply upload the photos to Council’s facebook page to be in to win.”
“The week includes World Environment Day and Arbour Day both on the Thursday 5 June. For Arbour day there is a chance to
win a native plant pack. Learn how to turn kitchen scraps into garden gold at the worm farming workshop at the
Tairawhiti Environment Centre. Later at 4.30pm the HB Williams Memorial Library will hold the prize giving for the
‘Gadgets invented from junk’ competition that local school children have participated in. Items will be on display for
all to admire.”
“During the week there will be days devoted to transforming your recycling, reducing your carbon footprint when
travelling, reducing food waste and conserving energy. It will culminate with an open day at the Rethink Environmental
Education Centre next to AllBrites. If you haven’t been to Rethink this is a great opportunity to see this facility that
has been rated as one of the best in the country.”
Action week is being promoted through Council’s facebook page, www.facebook.com/GisborneDC. Like this and start posting
on the site and you will be in to win every day.
