Brooklyn Library on the move for quake strengthening
Brooklyn Library will be closed for earthquake strengthening work starting Tuesday 15 April. The library in Cleveland
Street will close at the end of Thursday 10 April and services will resume from temporary premises at 199 Ohiro Road
(next to Penthouse Cinema) at 1pm, Wednesday 16 April.
The library will resume its normal hours and all aspects of the collection will be available. Issues and returns will
continue and people can collect reservations as normal. Story time will still happen on Tuesdays at 10.30am.
Three columns in the 1950’s building will be strengthened and two windows will be filled with reinforced concrete,
creating solid walls. This work will bring the building out of earthquake-prone status and make the building stronger
and safer.
This work is part of the Council’s programme of work to improve the resilience of public buildings in an earthquake.
Other buildings that will be strengthened this year include Network Newtown (beside Newtown Library in Constable
Street), Clarrie Gibbons building in Post Office Square and Thistle Hall on Cuba Street.
Owners of earthquake-prone heritage buildings are encouraged to apply for the Council’s Built Heritage Incentive Fund
which helps with conserving the city's heritage-listed buildings and objects. The closing date for the current round is
