Goals set for marathon competition winner

The Rotorua Marathon competition coordinated by Rotorua International Airport in conjunction with marathon organisers,
has culminated in an “ecstatic” winner who is set to hit the pavement in preparation, with clear goals in mind.
Alister Cordiner, from Darlinghurst, NSW, Australia, was the competition winner and received return flights from Sydney
direct to Rotorua for two people, entry to the 50th Rotorua Marathon on May 3, and six nights’ accommodation at the
Copthorne Hotel Rotorua.
This will be Mr Cordiner’s second marathon and he has already set some personal goals for the Rotorua event.
“The first marathon I did was the 2013 Sydney Running Festival, with a time of 4:27. In the Rotorua Marathon, my goal is
to get a time below4:00,” he says.
Mr Cordiner has run a half marathon, as well as several other smaller races in Sydney, but the Rotorua Marathon will be
his first race overseas.
“I am very excited to be doing it in a beautiful location like Rotorua!”
Airport business development manager Anna Rodgers says inspiration for the competition, which was run throughout
Australia with the help of marathon organisers Event Promotions, and Destination Rotorua Marketing, was to help promote
the trans-Tasman service from Rotorua to Sydney.
“We wanted to promote the ease with which people can fly direct to Rotorua from Sydney and tie that in with one of our
iconic local events. The marathon was perfect and it gives people another great reason to visit Rotorua.
“It is also fitting that we partnered together, as both the Airport and the Rotorua Marathon are celebrating their 50th
anniversaries this year.”
Mr Cordiner will travel to Rotorua with his partner Maarit, who is considering running in the 10k event on the day.
This will be the couple’s second visit to New Zealand, having travelled around the South Island together in 2012. Mr
Cordiner visited Rotorua around 10 years ago and can’t wait to come back with Maarit for the marathon.
“I’m ecstatic.”
