Te Teko seeks volunteer tree planters

The Rangitaiki River Forum – a partnership between iwi, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Whakatāne District Council –
is putting its weight behind a community planting day along the banks of the Rangitaiki River running through Te Teko.
The area to be planted continues alongside last year’s planting zone on the river banks below the Rugby Club.
In 2012, the local community turned out in force to plant hundreds of native trees and shrubs. The focus of this work is
to re-plant native vegetation in areas that have lost trees due to flood damage or during rock protection works to
stabilise the river banks.
Rangitaiki River Forum Member, Miro Araroa, said it was important for the community to focus on these practical planting
events as steps to the bigger outcomes for the River.
“The Forum works in close partnership with all those who share an interest in the river to protect and enhance the
health and well-being of the Rangitaiki River and its resources to benefit present and future generations. If we take
care of our river, our river will continue to take care of us,” he said.
“This is something practical we can do to help restore the Rangitaiki River to a better, more natural state. So I
encourage anyone in the community to come along, bring the kids and a spade and enjoy a great day out,” Mr Araroa said.
