Students show their talents in secondary school art competition

An art competition created specifically for senior secondary school students in the Waikato and Coromandel closes at the
end of this week.
The competition is supported by newly formed regional arts organisation Creative Waikato and is being run by Paterson
Burn Optometrists. The theme and title for the competition is ‘eyes are the window to your soul’.
Entries close on 19 April with judging being carried out during May. As well as cash prizes, the entering artists will
have the opportunity to sell their work online with a percentage of the sale price being donated to Diabetes New
Zealand.
Senior Paterson Burn Optometrists partner Adrian Paterson says the first entries that have been received are impressive.
“Obviously there is a significant artistic talent in our community and that is certainly reflected in the entries we
have seen. It is extremely encouraging for the competition,” he says.
There will be $2000 available in cash prizes. Prize money will be split between students and their schools. Students who
opt to put their artwork up for sale online will get to keep 80 percent of proceeds from any that is sold. The remaining
20 per cent will be donated to Diabetes New Zealand. Entry is free and is open to year 12 and year 13 students.
The competition judges are Tim Croucher, Programme Manager Painting and Sculpture, Wintec School of Media Arts; Lisa
Voigt Art Curator and Owner of Soul Gallery and Kat Quin Merewether owner/designer at Design on Q. The panel will
personally review all submissions and shortlist twelve artists. The finalists will then have their artwork displayed at
Paterson Burn branches throughout the Waikato and Coromandel and will then be displayed in the gallery at the new
Creative Waikato premises on Alexandra Street, Hamilton.
