Hawke’s Bay marine-only tsunami threat
Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group advises coastal water users to be expecially alert if they’re
on the water during the evening of Waitangi Day.
A tsunami threat for New Zealand has been advised as a result of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake in the Santa Cruz Islands at
2.14pm this afternoon.
GNS have adivsed the impact of this distant offshore earthquake poses only a marine threat within Hawke’s Bay. Coastal
surges of between 20 centimetres and 1 metre are expected from 6-7pm tonight, Wednesday 6th February.
Please note that harbours can amplify the effect of surge waves, so people in Ahuriri marina, for
example, should take care in and around the water.
People at the coastline should also take appropriate precautions, and keep up to date using the radio.
