$250,000 Upgrade at Cannons Creek Pool
A flash new Cannons Creek Pool opened its doors again on the weekend following a $250,000 upgrade by the Council.
Mayor Nick Leggett says the pool is a well-loved community facility and the improvements by Council have made it a much
better space where community events can be held.
“It’s now an even better place for the community to come together. The pool sees 700 kids through its doors every week
and generations of the city’s residents have learned to swim there – including myself! The Council wants to keep it that
way.”
He says some people’s claims that the Council doesn’t invest in Cannons Creek are not based on fact.
“This is a $250,000 investment and locals can have confidence that the Council is committed to providing services there
as in any other part of the city.”
The main features of the upgrade work include:
• New family changing rooms which are accessible and include showers and toilets
• Modern new non-slip floor surface to improve customer safety and reduce the need for floor matting.
• A contrast colour used on the up-stand around the pool to increase visibility for the visually impaired
• New off the poolside storage which enables more space poolside for customer use
• Refurbished staff room which can now be used as a training room for swimming instructors and coaches and a
meeting place for the Swim Club
• New staff office to improve the quality of service particularly for Dash Swim School for the Learn to Swim and
the Kiwisport Schools Learn to Swim
• The replacement of the poolside slide with a new inflatable which features a dual slide.
• Bright new décor and lighting upgrades in the main pool hall that are more energy efficient including emergency
lighting
The Dash Swim School continues to grow in quality and numbers and the Council, with support from Kiwisport Funding, is
hoping to assist with over 2000 kids learn to swim this year through the schools programme.
“With the community concerned about drowning rates, it’s great that the Council can enhance a facility that will help
prevent future drownings. It’s a fantastic facility, where more of our kids can learn to swim, but also it’s now easier
for the community to hold other activities and I’m sure it will be utilised a lot more in this way.”
