Heavy rains forecast for North Otago
The Otago Regional Council (ORC) is closely monitoring North Otago rivers, following a MetService rain watch issued today for the area.
Thunderstorms and heavy rains are forecast for North Otago over a brief period this afternoon and into the evening.
Around 40 to 50mm of rain is predicted to fall. This may lead to rapidly rising levels on the Kakanui, Waianakarua, and Shag rivers.
The public is advised to exercise care when near these rivers as they may rise quickly. Farmers should move stock from low-lying areas to higher ground.
River level and rainfall information can be checked on the ORC water info webpage
www.orc.govt.nz/waterinfo or by phoning 0800 426 463
Information on natural hazards, including inundation maps can be viewed on the ORC natural hazards database www.orc.govt.nz/Natural-Hazards
