Old sewer pipes to be replaced in January
Good progress has been made upgrading the oldest parts of the Gisborne city’s network of wastewater pipes. The pipes
through the Elgin Shopping Centre, parts of Customhouse Street, Lytton Road and Collins Street by Abbott Street were all
completed before Christmas.
Gisborne District Council contractors will continue work in Collins Street where it intersects with Childers Road after
the holidays. The main pipe and several of the laterals will be replaced and this will require the road to be excavated.
The work is estimated to take five weeks.
Towards the end of January wastewater pipes will be replaced in the following locations.
• At the bottom of Hillview Terrace, uphill from the intersection with Hospital Road, the pipes extend into
private property.
• On the Esplanade between Rutene and Wainui Roads.
• On Customhouse Street from Pitt Street to Kahutia Street) and Kahutia Street from Customhouse towards Lowe
Street.
• On Ormond Road from the Unity Theatre to Wi Pere Street – February start.
Work in each of these locations is estimated to take eight weeks and roads will need to be dug up.
Road users are likely to experience some delays and there will be dust and extra noise. Some work in these areas will be
completed at night when flows in the pipe are low and to minimise inconvenience.
The pipes that are being replaced this year are those that have been identified by camera inspection to be nearing
complete failure, says wastewater team leader Helen Churton. “By carrying out these works now Council will be able to
ensure ongoing wastewater/sewage services to Gisborne residents, now and in the future. Also, by doing this work before
any pipes fail completely we will be saving money as emergency work invariably costs more than planned work.”
To keep everyone safe traffic will be managed around the road works. This may result in delays. Council thanks all road
users for their patience and cooperation.
