Library Can Amnesty
Book borrowers with fines owing can receive some early Christmas cheer with the return of a special initiative to local
libraries.
Beginning on Monday 3 December, all local libraries are holding a week long amnesty where borrowers can have $5 in
overdue fines wiped in return for a can of food for charity.
Queenstown Library manager Robyn Robertson said the initiative proved extremely popular last year with over 300 cans
being collected in Queenstown alone and she was expecting a similar response this year.
“It’s the libraries good deed for Christmas. People get a gift from us in the form of waived fines and local charities
benefit as well.”
“It’s a win-win situation,” she said.
The terms of the amnesty stipulate that only overdue fines for items that have been returned are eligible for the waiver
and any cans of food presented must be within their use by date and without rust or dents.
The amnesty runs from Monday 3 December to Saturday 8 December.
The charities chosen to benefit from the amnesty are individual to each area. Queenstown and Arrowtown have chosen
Happiness House, while the Upper Clutha libraries will be donating to Wanaka Community Networks.
