Huge Response to Grey and Westland Community Awards
Locals on the West Coast have got behind their volunteers with 40 entries received for the TrustPower Grey District Community Awards and 33 entries received for the TrustPower Westland Community Awards.
Entries for both the Grey and Westland Community Awards closed on Friday 3 August. The Awards, which are run in conjunction with the Grey and Westland District Councils, recognise and reward voluntary groups for the outstanding contribution they make to their local community.
TrustPower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says she is thrilled that so many generous and hard working community groups will be celebrated through this year’s TrustPower Community Awards.
“Right across the West Coast volunteers work tirelessly, and give so much, for the benefit of others. It is wonderful that we now have the opportunity to recognise the work of some of these fabulous and deserving community groups,” says Miss Somerville.
“A big thanks must also go to those who entered these wonderful groups for the Community Awards. I am looking forward to celebrating the success of these unsung heroes alongside these people,” she says.
The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards.
The 2012 TrustPower National Community Awards will be held in Far North district in March 2013.
Entries for both the TrustPower Grey District Community Awards and TrustPower Westland District Community Awards are currently being prepared for judging. The Grey District Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Monday 24 September and the Westland District Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Tuesday 25 September, to which all entered organisations and nominators will be invited.
