Zero alcohol limit for drivers under 20
Police will enforce the new legislation aimed at young drinking drivers from Sunday morning.
"We will be stopping and breath testing young drivers from Sunday but we do not plan to target young drivers specifically," said Superintendent Paula Rose, Police National Manager - Road Policing.
"There has been advertising and information available so we are confident that the majority of young drivers have got the message, I certainly hope so. We are confident that these new measures will make a difference and help in making young people and in fact, all drivers safer," she said.
"We do not want one bad day or a single poor decision to cost anybody their life. If drivers keep speeds down, match their driving to the conditions and don't drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, we believe that together we can keep everyone safer.
At this time of year it is also a good time for all drivers, not just younger ones, to think about the safety of their vehicle and to also consider the safety of the route they plan to take.
We want to make sure that every journey is a safer journey for every driver and every passenger - every time. "
