Media Release – 19th January 2011.
Radio 1XX Turns 40 IN 2011.
2011 is Rugby World Cup year in New Zealand (Go The All Blacks!) But it is also a big year for a little private radio station that could. 30th June 2011 marks 40 years since Radio 1XX went on the air broadcasting to the Eastern Bay Of Plenty – the fourth private commercial radio station in New Zealand and the first in a provincial area of the country.
Have you worked at 1XX? We want to hear from you (well it is RADIO after all). The station is looking for expressions of interest for a get together of former staff of 1XX for the weekend of 25th & 26th June 2011 for 1XX's 40th Birthday in Whakatane – NZ’s Sunshine Capital. We’d like to hear from past announcers and newsreaders, managers, copy writers, receptionists, sales reps, production engineers and technical staff, etc who have worked at 1XX since its beginnings in 1971 to be part of the celebrations. The 1XX team are also happy to take suggestions for events, activities or themes for that weekend.
Over the years some who have worked at 1XX include Doug Harvey who was 1XX’s breakfast host in 1973 and went on to be one of the original hosts of the Lotto draws on TV2, and various news reporters: Leanne Malcolm (TV3 News), Ric Salizzo (former host of The Sports Café programme), Stephen Stuart (TVNZ - ONE News sports reporter) and in recent times Matt McLean – who has just been promoted from TVNZ’s Breakfast team to the main 6pm ONE News team.
See the 1XX 40th Anniversary page on Facebook to register your interests.
