NZ-UK Society gifts $15,000 to Christchurch quake fund
The New Zealand-UK Society, an established group of Kiwis working in London, today gave Christchurch mayor bob Parker
$15,000 to the Canterbury earthquake fund.
Society president Michelle Marsh said the money was raised in London from public donations, the NZ Society Charity
Fund, the NZ Business Women’s Network, and the society’s quiz night and Kiwi Oktoberfest events.
``It’s been breath-taking looking at all the damage around Christchurch and I felt that after-shock last night. I
didn’t like it,’’ Marsh said after meeting Parker in his office today.
``As a Kiwi, it’s been great to fly back home and give this money that people have donated in London. Bob Parker seems
a good guy and I’m sure that money will help a little bit somewhere.’’
The society was established in 1927 as a dining club for New Zealanders in London. Since then, the club has developed
into the leading organisation for those working in the UK with strong links to New Zealand. The Duke of Edinburgh in the
patron and the society has staged the New Zealand of the Year in the UK awards for the last 13 years.
Anna Hansen, chef and owner of The Modern Pantry restaurant, won the New Zealander of the Year in the UK Award in
February this year.
