At about 10am on Sunday 25 October 2009, Police discovered debris and serious damage to a fence, just south of Muldoon's Corner, on State Highway Two, Rimutaka Hill, Upper Hutt.
At the same time two motorists reported seeing a vehicle about 200 metres down the side of the hill. Parts of a car were visible from the road, but could not be reached, due to the terrain.
The Fire Service attended and reached the vehicle using ropes.
The driver was rescued in a joint operation involving the Fire Service, Wellington Free Ambulance and Police Search and Rescue. The driver was, stabilised, removed from the car and lifted to the road on a stretcher. The rescue was difficult and took almost three hours to complete.
The driver was flown to Wellington Hospital by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter. His injuries are not life threatening.
The road was closed for about four hours, causing serious delays for motorists, travelling to and from the Wairarapa.
